Yuken Teruya, a Japanese artist based in Brooklyn manipulates everyday objects, transforming their meanings to reflect on contemporary society and culture. Cutting trees out of paper bags and cardboard toilet paper rolls, he creates meticulous and intricate art works, small and enchanting worlds, which relate to broader in a variety of media and often references consumer culture alongside traditional craft techniques.

Junior Fritz Jacquet is an artist who has been fascinated by paper from the very young age. He has created series of masks by bending and folding empty toilet paper rolls. He explores and experiments with folding and crumpling techniques, innovating with his fingers methods still undiscovered to create forms and craft poetic objects, that visually enhance any surrounding.

Anastassia Elias, Paris born artist, created different life situations  inside of each brown paper roll while leaving the outside intact.  With a sharp blade in hand, she is successful in creating pop-up book like feeling. Anastassia Elias cut the small paper shapes that she stick inside the toilet paper rolls. With the use of tweezers, she manipulate the paper shapes. The tricky part is she selects the paper of the same color as the roll. It gives the illusion that the paper figures make part of the roll. The contrast of the light and shadows in each photos add a unique dimension to the scene, enabling different players to come into focus.

There is an interesting article on Beru Betto to create some “pixel” characters by assembling several toilet rolls together on the wall. There is also a template for you to work on or you can simply create your own characters. Here are some of the pictures from the tutorial.
