Carl Warner is a UK based artist who make Foodscapes,i.e.landscapes made up of food. At first glance, these photographs looks like a wooded landscapes with big rocks, dense forest in the background. However, if you look closely you will realize that it is actually made up of broccoli, beans, potatoes, bread, asparagus, courgettes, and corn. So, basically everything you see in the photograph is made up of food.
Carl began his career at art college as an illustrator. His imagination in drawing led him to discover a completely new field:photography. With the passion in photography, he slowly got interested in manipulating the landscape that he photographs. The whole process of Foodscape is very time consuming and can take of couple of days to get the final touch. To get the right shape and size of the fruits and vegetables is also essential.

The trees, of course, are made from broccoli’s! The “rows” of farmland are made of corn, asparagus, and zucchini. Potatoes stand in for rocks. The hot air balloons are made with strawberries and garlic.

The castle is made out of cheese, the walls out of rice, and the wagon wheels out of mushrooms!

A boat made of watermelon, peas, olives and asparagus plough trough a stormy seas made of radicchio salad. These are just a few of the intricate details found in the mouth-watering food worlds created for European advertising and food industry campaigns.

“I use very classical composition techniques which are used in painting. This helps the viewer to believe that it is a real scene as they feel comfortable in the traditional aspects of landscape composition,” explains Warner.

The food is no longer edible after being glued, pinned and fiddled with under the hot lights during the photography process, but the leftovers are shared with the crew or sent to a homeless shelter. People always ask Carl what made him think of these ideas and how did he come up with such a concept as if it’s some kind of freak happening. As he sees it, he just had an idea and did something about it. Carl hopes to produce a book in the future that would appeal to food and art lovers. So, don’t think of doing something..just go and do it!!!
